PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA December 27, 2025 – Cambodia and Thailand have reached a new ceasefire agreement, taking effect at noon local time (UTC+7), halting intense border fighting that resumed earlier this month and claimed over 100 lives while displacing hundreds of thousands.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the accord in a statement, highlighting its focus on civilian protection and practical stability measures.
“I welcome the ceasefire agreed by Cambodia and Thailand, which took effect at 12:00 (UTC+7),” Anwar said. “The decision to halt fighting and to hold forces in place reflects a shared recognition that restraint is required, above all in the interest of civilians.”
The joint statement outlines key provisions, including verification by an ASEAN Observer Team and direct communication channels between defense authorities. Both sides committed to maintaining current troop positions without reinforcements.
Anwar expressed hope for faithful implementation: “These provide a basis for stability, and I am hopeful that both sides will carry them out faithfully.”
The agreement follows renewed clashes that erupted on December 7, shattering a previous truce brokered earlier in the year. Fighting involved artillery, rockets, and airstrikes along the disputed 817-km border, with mutual accusations of aggression.
