KUALA LUMPUR, April 25, 2026 – Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has spotlighted the success of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, saying it played a key role in safeguarding national energy security during last year’s major power disruption.
In a statement posted today on its official X account under the “Rancakkan MADANI” campaign, PETRA said the APG demonstrated its importance when Malaysia faced a widespread blackout on October 15, 2025.

The October 15 outage was triggered by a lightning strike at the Edra Melaka gas-fired power plant in Alor Gajah, which caused an automatic shutdown and the loss of more than 2,200 MW of generation capacity.
The disruption affected large parts of the Klang Valley (including Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Kepong), Johor Bahru, Kluang, Melaka, Ipoh, Kuantan and other areas, halting operations at shopping malls, commercial buildings and traffic lights.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) confirmed the source of the problem and restored full electricity supply across all affected areas by 5:54 pm the same day.
The swift import of 800 MW through the ASEAN Power Grid helped cushion the impact and prevent a more prolonged crisis. Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Fadillah Yusof had earlier told Parliament on October 29, 2025, that the emergency support from Singapore and Thailand showcased effective ASEAN energy cooperation.
The APG is a flagship ASEAN project aimed at interconnecting the electricity grids of all 10 member states. It seeks to enhance regional energy security, facilitate cross-border power trade, integrate more renewable energy and build resilience against supply disruptions.
PETRA’s latest statement reinforces the government’s push for greater regional collaboration in the energy sector as Malaysia continues its energy transition under the Malaysia Madani framework.
