PUTRAJAYA April 17, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today received a courtesy visit from Michael Punke, Vice President for Public Policy at Amazon Web Services (AWS), and his delegation to mark the one-year anniversary of the AWS Region launch in Malaysia.
The strategic investment continues to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional digital hub, according to the Prime Minister.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar said discussions during the meeting centred on the progress of AWS investments and their positive impact on the national economy. Key focus areas included accelerating Malaysia’s digital transformation agenda, promoting cloud adoption by the MADANI Government, developing local talent, and advancing sustainability commitments.
“AWS highlighted that Malaysia’s strong infrastructure and efficient supply chain are among the main factors behind the success of their investment in the country,” Anwar noted.
He emphasised that AWS should continue to expand opportunities for Malaysian companies to participate more meaningfully in its global ecosystem.
“The government will continue strengthening existing policies to ensure long-term benefits from this strategic investment, while also encouraging broader collaboration between local suppliers and the data centre and cloud technology ecosystem,” the Prime Minister added.
The AWS Region in Malaysia, first announced in 2023 with a planned investment of RM25.5 billion (approximately USD6 billion) by 2037, has become a cornerstone of the country’s push to become a cloud-first nation under the Malaysia MADANI framework.
Today’s meeting underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology investments to drive economic growth, create high-skilled jobs, and position Malaysia as a preferred digital destination in Southeast Asia.
The visit was accompanied by official photographs of the Prime Minister and the AWS delegation.
