PUTRAJAYA, November 6, 2026 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that his resignation takes effect as soon as former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrives at his home to begin house arrest, speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Transport (MOT) this afternoon.
According to a direct quote carried by Malaysia Gazette, Loke said: “Peletakan jawatan saya berkuat kuasa sebaik sahaja Datuk Seri Najib Razak sampai ke rumah beliau.” In English, that means his resignation takes effect as soon as Najib arrives at his residence. Harian Metro reported the same framing — that the resignation is effective immediately when Najib reaches his home for house arrest — after the Putrajaya briefing.
New Straits Times likewise reported that Loke announced the resignation at the Transport Ministry press conference today, describing it as taking effect immediately in connection with Najib’s move into house arrest. The NST article noted that more details were still to come.
MOT projects to continue; Loke to support ministry as MP
BFM News reported that Loke said all projects under MOT would continue as usual, and that he would continue supporting the ministry in his capacity as a Member of Parliament. BFM linked the announcement to the High Court’s decision allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest after payment of his RM50 million fine.
Pledge dating from September
The move follows a pledge Loke made after the DAP Central Executive Committee meeting on September 19, 2026, when he offered to resign as Transport Minister over Najib’s conditional pardon. Other DAP ministers remained in the Cabinet at that time for political stability, according to earlier reporting of the party’s position.
On September 28 and 29, 2026, Loke said he had handed his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar asked him to continue in the post temporarily. Loke then stated that the resignation would take effect on the day Najib returned home. Harian Metro’s account of today’s briefing recalled that September 29 hand-over and Anwar’s request that he stay on for the time being, linking the decision to DAP’s disagreement with Najib’s house-arrest arrangement.
House-arrest process under way today
Earlier today, UMNO confirmed that Najib’s RM50 million fine linked to the SRC International case had been paid at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, clearing the way for house arrest under the terms of his conditional pardon, Harian Metro reported. Separate coverage of the day’s events said the High Court had issued a house-arrest order and that Najib left Kajang Prison at about 2:37pm Malaysia time. Some reports also referred to a medical check at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and said elements of the house-arrest process were still pending; those accounts do not, by themselves, confirm that Najib had already reached his residence when Loke spoke.
Loke’s own wording, as carried by Malaysia Gazette, ties the effective moment of the resignation to Najib’s arrival at home rather than to the earlier prison departure. At the time of writing, there was no confirmed public announcement in the cited sources that Prime Minister Anwar had formally accepted the resignation or named a successor Transport Minister.
Loke remains Member of Parliament for Seremban and a senior DAP leader. BFM’s report said he would keep supporting MOT’s work from that parliamentary role while ministry projects continue without interruption, according to what he told reporters in Putrajaya.
