MEXICO CITY — Ryo Hirakawa scored a championship point on his Formula 1 debut for Haas after both Alpine drivers were stripped of their Mexico City Grand Prix points by post-race penalties.
Formula 1 highlighted the reshuffle on X: “Ryo Hirakawa is promoted to P10 on debut! Both Alpines received post-race penalties dropping them out of the points.” The update followed the stewards’ decisions after the chequered flag at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Before those rulings, Franco Colapinto had finished eighth and Pierre Gasly tenth. Both results were overturned after the pair were found to have breached yellow-flag procedures during the race, wiping Alpine’s points haul from the afternoon.
Colapinto received a 10-second time penalty and one licence point for insufficient slowing under a single yellow flag. Gasly was given a stop-and-go penalty, applied as a time penalty after the race, plus two licence points for failing to respect double yellow flags.
Combined with a separate penalty arising from Oscar Piastri’s collision involvement, the revised classification promoted Liam Lawson to seventh, Gabriel Bortoleto to eighth, Isack Hadjar to ninth and Hirakawa to tenth. Lawson had started the race from the pit lane, making his recovered points finish especially notable.
Hirakawa’s point caps a remarkable mid-weekend call-up. The Japanese driver was drafted into Haas for the Mexico City event and converted that unexpected opportunity into a points finish on debut after the post-race reshuffle — a rare debutant score in modern Formula 1.
The penalties land as a double blow for Alpine in the midfield battle, while Haas leave Mexico City with a debutant’s first championship point. Formula 1’s full write-up of the Gasly and Colapinto decisions is available on formula1.com for readers seeking the stewards’ detail.
Elsewhere on the same afternoon Max Verstappen won the Grand Prix from Lewis Hamilton and newly crowned champion Kimi Antonelli, whose third place sealed the drivers’ title. The lower half of the top 10, however, was rewritten entirely by the Alpine sanctions and related time adjustments.
The championship continues at the São Paulo Grand Prix from 6–8 November 2026, where the midfield fight for every point remains finely poised and Hirakawa will look to build on a debut that already delivered a score. It was a costly day for Enstone’s points tally and a memorable one for Haas’s late call-up. Team strategies and stewards’ notes both shaped the final picture that fans saw after the flag.
