Looking for something to put on with the family this weekend? Matchbox The Movie, the live-action adventure inspired by Mattel’s die-cast toy cars, is now streaming on Apple TV, where it premiered globally on October 9, 2026.
According to Apple TV’s official synopsis, the film is “an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (John Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.”
Cena leads a cast that includes Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave, the stunt coordinator who directed the Extraction films, and written by David Coggeshall. It is an Apple Original Film from Skydance Media and Mattel Films, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger producing for Skydance, and Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz producing for Mattel Films.
What parents should know
The film is rated PG-13 in the United States by the Motion Picture Association for language and sequences of violence and action. Variety lists its running time as 126 minutes, so families should set aside just over two hours. In LNA’s view, the rating makes it a better fit for households with teenagers than for those with young children, and parents of younger viewers may want to watch the trailer first.
Why it works for a weekend watch
In our view, the film’s appeal for a relaxed family evening lies in its simple ingredients: fast cars, chases across several countries and a story about old friends who stick together. Variety noted that Hargrave stages “setpiece after setpiece”, with many stunts looking more practical than expected, while Collider wrote that “what at least keeps Matchbox: The Movie watchable is the comedy”, singling out Richardson for carrying the comic relief.
Parents who grew up with Matchbox cars may also enjoy a bit of nostalgia with their children, since the film is built around Mattel’s long-running toy line. It is the latest of Mattel’s screen adaptations after Barbie, in which Cena also appeared.
Keep expectations light
Critics have not been kind. The Guardian called it “as pointless as a film based on a toy car could be”, and Variety said it “just does not feel like a film for adults”. Collider was more forgiving, calling it “watchable if you’ve got two hours to kill on some mindless action schlock”. That makes it, in the newsroom’s view, an easy, no-pressure pick for a family weekend rather than a must-see.
