KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 2026 — DAP will hold a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting tomorrow to decide its follow-up position after reiterating that Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1MDB-linked conviction must not be forgotten, even as it respects the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s constitutional power of pardon.
In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the 1MDB scandal remains the largest corruption scandal in the country’s history, one that associated Malaysia with kleptocracy, damaged the nation’s image and eroded public and investor confidence in national institutions.
He said Najib’s conviction in the 1MDB-related case was a decision of the courts, and its consequences for the country cannot be set aside.
The financial fallout, he added, is still being borne by the government and the people. Citing a Finance Ministry statement on Sept 13, 2026, Loke said the government’s total 1MDB-related obligations stand at RM51.4 billion, comprising RM42.5 billion already paid by the government and RM8.9 billion in remaining debt.
Loke said DAP has from the outset consistently demanded justice and accountability in the 1MDB scandal, including a full investigation and due process for those responsible through an independent and fair legal process.
He also recalled that public anger over 1MDB was among the main factors behind the change of government in the 14th General Election in 2018, and that the people’s mandate to fight corruption and the abuse of power remains DAP’s guiding principle.
Loke said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh had conveyed a position consistent with DAP’s principles while discharging her duties as a member of the Pardons Board.
“As she has explained, those views were conveyed honestly and frankly in the national interest,” he said.
At the same time, DAP respects the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power of pardon as provided for in the Federal Constitution. The party, Loke said, upholds constitutional monarchy and the supremacy of the Constitution, while defending the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
In light of that, a DAP CEC meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss and decide the party’s stance and follow-up action.
The statement comes after His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
