BANGI Aug 19, 2026 – Equal allocation to all Members of Parliament (MPs) is not necessarily fair because parliamentary constituencies vary in size and number of voters, said Bangi Member of Parliament Syahredzan Johan.
He noted that Bangi had more than 300,000 registered voters as of 2022, and this figure is expected to have increased further. The constituency is roughly three times larger than the national average in terms of registered voters.
He compared it with neighbouring constituencies: Hulu Langat (around 160,000 voters), Putrajaya (42,000) and Puchong (about 150,000).
“Bangi has more than 700,000 residents. The Member of Parliament for Bangi effectively needs to serve 700,000 people — not just 300,000 — as he or she cannot discriminate between voters and non-voters,” he said in a statement.
Syahredzan stressed that any discussion on constituency funding must ensure not only equality of access, but also fairness in the size of funds based on parameters such as the number of voters.
Service centre and staffing allocations must also take location into account, as the cost of maintaining an office and staff is significantly higher in certain areas. At the same time, development funds should reflect the greater need for infrastructure projects in rural areas compared to urban ones.
He supported the enactment of legislation to codify funding for all MPs regardless of political affiliation.
“As stated before, the DAP will support the Prime Minister to realise such legislation. However, the law should not only guarantee equality in terms of access to constituency funds, but also be fair and proportionate to the number of voters and the distinct circumstances of each constituency.”
He emphasised that this is not for the benefit of MPs, who will come and go, but to ensure fairness for voters in mega constituencies such as Bangi.
“If we do not take these into account, it would be unfair to voters in these constituencies who would need to ‘share’ the allocation with many more people compared to those in smaller constituencies,” he stressed.
