ANKARA August 15, 2026 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared that Turkey “cannot leave Gaza alone” and will take all necessary steps to support the territory, according to an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera.
In remarks set to air on Al Jazeera Arabic’s Al Muqabala programme, Erdogan said Hamas is fulfilling its commitments “in good faith,” while Israel continues its military operations. He stressed that Ankara would do “whatever was necessary” to stand by Gaza.
The Turkish leader also addressed wider regional issues. He pledged full support for Syria’s stability, saying Turkey would not leave its neighbours to face turmoil alone and noting plans to visit the country. He expressed serious concern over continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon, adding that he had raised the need to end the fighting during recent talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Erdogan further discussed a new joint defence agreement signed last week in Mecca by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. He said Egypt could join the pact — also known as the Mecca Agreement — describing it as open to expansion and an important message of collective deterrence.
The interview comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with Turkey maintaining its long-standing position of strong diplomatic and humanitarian support for Palestinians.
