KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 2026 — Tun Mohamed Eusoff Chin, Malaysia’s second Chief Justice, passed away early Friday morning at the age of 91.
His daughter, Zuliana, confirmed that he died at 1 a.m. Funeral prayers were held at Masjid Al-Hidayah in Kelana Jaya, after which he was laid to rest at the Section 9 Muslim Cemetery in Kota Damansara.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, describing the late jurist’s contributions to the nation.
“Takziah kepada seluruh keluarga Allahyarham Tun Mohamed Eusoff Chin, bekas Ketua Hakim Negara, yang telah kembali ke Rahmatullah pagi ini,” Anwar wrote.
He added that Eusoff Chin had rendered great service to the country, particularly in strengthening the judicial institution throughout his career, and that his contributions would always be remembered. Anwar prayed that Allah forgive his sins, bestow mercy upon him, and place his soul among the righteous and faithful, ending with Al-Fatihah.
Born in Batu Gajah, Perak, Mohamed Eusoff Chin began his working life as a teacher in 1955 before studying law in London. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1963.
He then joined the Judicial and Legal Service, serving in various roles including magistrate, Sessions Court president, deputy public prosecutor, legal adviser, parliamentary draftsman, High Court judge of Malaya, and President of the Court of Appeal. He was appointed Chief Justice on 25 September 1994 and served until 19 December 2000, succeeding Tun Abdul Hamid Omar and preceding Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah.
During his tenure, he held the highest judicial office in Malaysia for more than six years. He was conferred the title Tun in 1997 as Grand Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia (SSM), among other honours.
His passing marks the end of a long and distinguished career in Malaysia’s legal and judicial system.
