KUALA LUMPUR August 1, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation on Saturday with Rajmohan Gandhi, the historian and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, discussing efforts to deepen historical and civilizational links between Malaysia and India.
In a post on X, Anwar described Rajmohan Gandhi as an “old friend.” The two recalled their earlier meeting at a conference on democracy in Asia that Gandhi had organised in Mumbai in 2012.
They exchanged views on ways to reinforce Malaysia-India relations through academic and intellectual cooperation as well as dialogue between civilisations. Anwar invited Gandhi to visit Malaysia in the first quarter of 2027 to deliver lectures and share insights on democracy, peace, harmony and value-based leadership with scholars, students and community leaders.
“I hope this long-standing friendship will continue to be strengthened,” Anwar wrote, using the hashtags associated with his Malaysia MADANI agenda.
The conversation forms part of ongoing efforts under Anwar’s administration to promote inter-civilisational dialogue and closer people-to-people ties with India.
