TEHRAN July 16, 2026 — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it has shot down another U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone, adding to a growing list of American unmanned aircraft losses in the ongoing conflict.
According to Iranian state media reports cited by Tasnim news agency, IRGC air defense forces intercepted and destroyed an “enemy” MQ-9 Reaper drone over Andimeshk in southwestern Iran. The drone, a General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper valued at approximately $30 million, was reportedly brought down using a new air defense system operated by the IRGC Aerospace Force.
The claim comes as U.S. forces conducted another round of airstrikes overnight into July 16, targeting Iranian military sites linked to threats against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Explosions were reported in multiple cities including Ahvaz, Khorramabad, Bushehr, and southern coastal areas.
In Ahvaz, strikes damaged the child cancer treatment department at Shahid Baghaei Hospital, forcing an evacuation of patients. Iranian officials reported at least 35 people killed and over 300 injured nationwide from the latest wave of strikes, including at least seven soldiers killed at an army barracks.
This latest Iranian claim fits a established pattern. U.S. officials have previously acknowledged the loss of roughly two dozen to 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones since the conflict began earlier in 2026. Many were shot down by Iranian air defenses, while others were destroyed on the ground.
Wikipedia’s documented list of aviation incidents in the 2026 Iran war records multiple MQ-9 Reaper shootdowns through early July, with the most recent confirmed entry on July 7 over Khvormuj in Bushehr province.
The MQ-9 Reaper is a long-endurance, multi-role unmanned aerial vehicle used extensively by the U.S. for intelligence, surveillance, and strike missions. Its high operational cost and vulnerability to modern air defenses have made it a frequent target in the current conflict.
Iranian forces have also claimed actions against other U.S. assets in the region, including reports of targeting the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and downing drones over Iraq. U.S. Central Command has stated its strikes are focused on degrading Iranian capabilities threatening maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides issuing statements amid ongoing tensions and reported mediation efforts. No independent confirmation of the latest drone shootdown has been issued by U.S. authorities as of this report.
