PUTRAJAYA July 10, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended warm birthday greetings to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his 101st birthday today.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar wrote in Malay: “Selamat ulangtahun kelahiran yang ke-101 buat Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Semoga Tun terus dilimpahi rahmat, kesihatan yang baik dan berada dalam keberkatanNya, Insya-Allah.” He translated the sentiment as wishing Tun continued blessings, good health, and divine grace.
Anwar accompanied the message with two photos. One shows a recent moment of the pair interacting, with Mahathir seated in a wheelchair alongside his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Ali. The second is a nostalgic image from their earlier years in government, capturing a lighter moment between the mentor and his former protégé.
Anwar served as Mahathir’s deputy prime minister from 1993 until their dramatic fallout in 1998, which led to the Reformasi movement. Despite periods of political rivalry — with Mahathir having been openly critical of Anwar’s administration since 2022 — today’s gesture highlights a moment of public goodwill from the current prime minister toward Malaysia’s longest-serving leader.
Mahathir, born on July 10, 1925, in Alor Setar, Kedah, remains a prominent figure in Malaysian politics. His office marked the occasion by relaunching his personal website/blog to receive public well-wishes.
The post quickly gained traction, with thousands of views and reactions reflecting the enduring public interest in the relationship between the two leaders. Well-wishers from across the political spectrum have joined in celebrating the milestone for the veteran statesman.
