JOHOR BAHRU July 9, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim was moved by the determination of a grandmother who rode a motorcycle through an oil palm plantation to bring her 9-year-old grandson to meet him at a recent public programme in Felda Palong Timur, Segamat.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Anwar shared the touching story of young Muhammad Afif Ikhwan, who had long wished to see the Prime Minister up close. The boy’s grandmother, Rosimah Mohammad, 58, from Kampung Pudu in Segamat, made the journey on her motorcycle through the plantation so her grandson could fulfil his dream.
The meeting took place on Sunday (July 5) during a programme where Anwar was speaking. Afif squeezed through the crowd to extend his hand as the Prime Minister walked toward the stage. Anwar not only shook the boy’s hand but also brought him onto the stage to stand beside him during his speech.
“I was touched when I saw the dream of a young child, Muhammad Afif Ikhwan, aged nine, who wanted to see me up close,” Anwar wrote. “An ambition that may seem small to us, but big enough to move his grandmother Rosimah Mohammad to ride through the oil palm plantation on a motorcycle to fulfil her grandson’s wish.”
Anwar added that the brief encounter meant a great deal to Afif. He requested that the boy be visited and cared for, and specifically asked for a bicycle to be given to him. “No matter how busy we are managing the country and facing various big challenges, we must never lose our humanity in caring for and showing kindness to others,” he said.
Following the event, Anwar arranged for a representative to visit Afif’s home in Kampung Pudu. PKR deputy information chief Siti Aishah Shaik Ismail visited on the Prime Minister’s behalf and presented gifts including a bicycle, a school bag, and a pair of shoes.
Rosimah told Bernama that Afif was so excited he could hardly sleep before the meeting. She described her surprise and joy when Anwar shook her grandson’s hand and invited him onstage. She said Afif continues to cherish the memory — hugging the shirt he wore during the encounter every night.
The story highlights Anwar’s emphasis on personal connection and kindness amid his official duties, turning a simple wish into a memorable experience for the young boy from a rural Felda community.
