PUTRAJAYA July 9, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today welcomed his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, for an official two-day visit to Malaysia.
The visit, which runs from July 9 to 10, marks Anutin’s first official trip to Malaysia since his reappointment as Prime Minister in March 2026. It was extended at Anwar’s invitation and underscores the close, longstanding ties between the two neighbouring ASEAN nations.
In a post on X, Anwar described the occasion as a celebration of Anutin’s arrival at the official welcoming ceremony held at Kompleks Bunga Raya and Perdana Putra in Putrajaya.
“The visit reflects the close relations between Malaysia and Thailand that have long been established, while opening a new chapter to strengthen strategic cooperation in various fields that will benefit both countries and their peoples,” Anwar stated.
Bilateral talks between the two leaders are expected to cover:
- Trade and investment
- Border connectivity
- Security
- Agriculture
- Tourism
- Education
- People-to-people exchanges
- Regional and international developments
A highlight of the visit will take place on July 10, when Anwar and Anutin are scheduled to jointly officiate the opening of a new road linking the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Malaysia, with the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Sadao, Thailand. This comes ahead of the opening of the new permanent Sadao border checkpoint on July 11.
The visit is seen as a step toward deeper practical cooperation between the two countries, which share a long border and strong economic and cultural links.
Official photographs from the welcoming ceremony show the Thai Prime Minister being greeted upon arrival and the two leaders posing together in front of iconic Putrajaya landmarks under clear skies.
The engagement reflects Malaysia and Thailand’s commitment to advancing bilateral relations ahead of the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2027.
