TOKYO, JAPAN June 9, 2026 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim kicked off the first day of his official working visit to Japan on Tuesday by meeting long-time friend and philanthropist Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
The two leaders reflected on their decades-long collaboration, including through the Forum 2000 initiative founded by the late Czech President Václav Havel. The forum brings together global leaders, scholars, and thinkers to discuss democracy, human rights, peace, and the future of civilization.
Anwar also highlighted joint efforts to empower Southeast Asian youth through leadership development programs inspired by the Asian Renaissance concept, aimed at nurturing leaders rooted in values, culture, and humanity. He expressed deep appreciation for Sasakawa’s extensive humanitarian contributions worldwide.
During the meeting, the pair exchanged views on pressing international issues, including the situation in Myanmar, the Israel-Iran conflict, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine. They stressed the need for sustained global peace efforts driven by dialogue, mutual understanding, and a commitment to justice.
Anwar arrived in Tokyo on Monday, June 8, 2026, for a three-day visit until June 10. The trip aims to strengthen bilateral ties with Japan, boost economic cooperation, and include participation in forums such as the Nikkei Forum. This marks his third visit to Japan as Prime Minister since taking office in 2022.
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has long supported initiatives in Asia, including health, education, and peace-building programs. Yohei Sasakawa, also known for his work in leprosy elimination and global philanthropy, continues to play a prominent role in international humanitarian efforts.
