BEIJING/MOSCOW, May 19, 2026 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the close strategic relationship between Russia and China as playing a key stabilizing role on the world stage, emphasizing joint efforts toward peace, universal prosperity, and the defense of international law.
In remarks released ahead of his two-day state visit to Beijing, Putin highlighted the deepening ties between Moscow and Beijing as a positive factor in global affairs. “The close strategic relationship between Russia and China plays an important stabilizing role in the world stage,” he stated. “At the same time, we are not opposing anyone, but working for the cause of peace and universal prosperity.”
Putin noted that the two countries coordinate actions to uphold the UN Charter in its entirety and actively engage through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and BRICS. These efforts, he said, contribute significantly to addressing urgent global and regional challenges.
“I am sure that together we will continue to do everything possible to deepen the Russian-Chinese partnership and good neighborliness, for the dynamic development of our two countries as well as the prosperity of our peoples in support of global security and stability,” Putin added.
The comments come as Putin arrives in China for talks with President Xi Jinping. The visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership and the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation. Bilateral trade reached a record $245 billion in 2024, with increasing use of national currencies and new initiatives like visa-free travel. Discussions are expected to cover energy projects such as Power of Siberia-2, high-tech cooperation, and up to 40 new agreements.
Analysts view the partnership as a cornerstone of efforts toward a multipolar world order, with both nations positioning themselves as defenders of international fairness amid shifting geopolitics. Russia and China have expanded cooperation across economic, military, and diplomatic spheres, including through BRICS expansion and SCO activities.
The statements have drawn mixed international reactions, with supporters seeing them as a counter to Western dominance and critics pointing to ongoing conflicts, including Russia’s actions in Ukraine and tensions over Taiwan.
Putin’s visit underscores the resilience of Russia-China ties, described by officials as reaching an “unprecedented level” of comprehensive strategic coordination.
