KUALA LUMPUR May 10, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged Malaysian Indian students to become “agents of change” who promote national unity across race and religion while rejecting narrow racial politics that divide society.
Speaking at a Majlis Ramah Mesra (friendly gathering) with Indian students at Universiti Malaya, Anwar emphasised that the future of Malaysia depends on the courage of young people to dismantle walls of communalism in “picisan” (petty) politics and build a more united, stable, and progressive nation.
“The students must continue to play an important role as agents of change that bring progress and renewal to the country based on knowledge, values, and maturity of thought,” he said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“They are a new source of strength capable of uniting the people regardless of race, religion, and background, thereby rejecting narrow racial politics that only divides society and threatens national harmony.”
Anwar reaffirmed the MADANI government’s commitment to social justice, stating that the Malaysia MADANI concept places strong emphasis on compassion (ihsan), justice, and the welfare of all citizens regardless of race or religion.
During the event, the Prime Minister announced an additional RM50 million allocation to the Unit Transformasi Masyarakat India Malaysia (MITRA). This brings the total funding for MITRA in 2026 to RM150 million, aimed at empowering economically disadvantaged and marginalised Indian communities through welfare programmes, education, skills training, and economic opportunities.
The increase was described as recognition of MITRA’s effective performance in addressing the needs of the Indian community. Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar and other leaders have hailed the move as a historic step towards greater inclusivity.
The announcement and speech underscore the MADANI administration’s ongoing focus on inclusive policies that bridge ethnic divides and ensure no community is left behind in Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.
The event at Universiti Malaya was attended by Indian students and community representatives, with Anwar sharing several photographs from the gathering on social media.
