ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – April 27, 2026 – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very good” following an extended high-level meeting in St. Petersburg today.
The discussions, which lasted more than an hour and a half, covered a wide range of issues including bilateral relations, regional stability, and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
“We had a very good meeting with Mr. Putin,” Araghchi told reporters after the talks. “All topics… bilateral relations, regional issues, as well as the war and aggression of the American regime and the Zionist regime were discussed in detail.”
Putin assured Iran of Russia’s unwavering backing. According to statements released after the meeting, the Russian leader told Araghchi: “For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests, the interests of all the people of the region, so that peace can be achieved as soon as possible.”
Putin also revealed he had received a personal message from Iran’s Supreme Leader last week and emphasized that the world admires Iran’s steadfastness in the face of external pressures.
The meeting comes as part of an intensive Iranian diplomatic push. Araghchi’s visit to Russia follows recent stops in Pakistan and Oman, aimed at building international support amid stalled nuclear negotiations with the United States and reported U.S.-Israeli military actions targeting Iranian interests.
Both Iran and Russia, as key BRICS partners, have increasingly aligned their positions on resisting what they describe as Western interference in regional affairs. The strengthened partnership is seen by analysts as a strategic counterweight to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Araghchi expressed gratitude for Russia’s consistent support and highlighted “very good grounds” for deeper cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
The development is being closely watched as the Middle East remains on edge, with diplomatic channels working behind the scenes to prevent further escalation.
