BATU KAWAN, PENANG April 25, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today led the commemoration of the Road Transport Department (JPJ)’s 80th anniversary, using the occasion to praise the department’s frontline role while addressing public feedback and the ongoing global energy crisis.
Speaking at the event in Batu Kawan, Anwar commended JPJ personnel for their steadfast commitment to maintaining road order and safety across eight decades of service.
“Criticisms towards JPJ are inevitable. Some arise from high public expectations for improvement, while others may be driven by sentiment. Nevertheless, all feedback must be received with wisdom,” he said.
The Prime Minister urged JPJ staff to view criticisms as constructive opportunities to rectify shortcomings, bolster integrity, and elevate service standards for the rakyat.
Turning to the economy, Anwar highlighted the worsening global energy crisis that continues to disrupt fuel supply and push prices higher worldwide. He revealed that the MADANI government is currently absorbing an additional RM7 billion per month in fuel subsidies to protect Malaysians from the full impact of these increases.
“Thanks to these subsidies, Malaysians continue to enjoy RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre, while around 85% of diesel users pay between RM1.65 and RM2.15 per litre,” Anwar explained.
Acknowledging the continued burden on diesel vehicle owners, the Prime Minister announced that the government is actively considering a reduction in road tax rates for diesel vehicles in the near future.
“Insya-Allah, as long as there is effort and determination, we will continue to move forward together, safeguarding the nation’s resilience and ensuring no citizen is left to face these challenges alone,” he added.
The visit forms part of Anwar’s working trip to Penang and underscores the government’s dual focus on improving public services and providing economic relief amid global uncertainties.
