KUALA LUMPUR, April 22, 2026 – Member of Parliament for Klang, Ganabatirau Veraman, has expressed grave concern over the reported arrest of three individuals, including a deputy chairman of an NGO, who are suspected of misappropriating approximately RM230 million in zakat funds.
In a strongly-worded statement, the Klang MP described the alleged incident — if proven true — as “a major betrayal of the trust of the ummah and a violation of the rights of the asnaf who are supposed to receive assistance.”
“Zakat funds are not ordinary funds — they are a sacred trust that must be managed with the highest level of integrity, transparency and responsibility,” he said.
Ganabatirau stressed that any misuse not only violates the law but also damages public confidence in religious institutions.
He outlined four key demands:
- A comprehensive, transparent and independent investigation must be conducted without any interference from any party.
- If the individuals are found guilty, strict action must be taken without compromise.
- An immediate independent audit and urgent improvements to the zakat management system must be implemented.
- Greater transparency in the reporting and utilisation of zakat funds must be enhanced.
“We cannot compromise on matters of trust. Public confidence must be restored through concrete actions, not mere promises,” he added.
At the same time, Ganabatirau urged fairness, reminding the public not to tarnish the entire institution due to the actions of a few individuals.
“Many more are carrying out their duties with honesty and full dedication,” he said, adding that “integrity cannot be selective. Trust must not be betrayed.”
The statement comes amid growing public scrutiny over the management of zakat funds, which are meant to support the underprivileged in line with Islamic principles.
