PUTRAJAYA April 20, 2026 – Malaysia’s Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunications companies to resolve poor mobile internet coverage along the Electric Train Service (ETS) route from KL Sentral to Segamat within the next 30 days.
Fahmi made the announcement after personally riding the ETS to Johor yesterday, accompanied by an MCMC team that conducted real-time speed and cellular coverage tests throughout the journey.
(Translation: “Took the ETS to Johor today. The MCMC team also carried out speed and cellular coverage quality tests along the ETS route from KL Sentral to Segamat. Satisfactory, but still not at a very good level. I have directed MCMC and telecommunications companies to resolve the internet access issues along the ETS service route within one month.”)
A video posted by the minister shows him on board the train, inspecting the situation firsthand. In the footage, he is seen speaking to officials while multiple smartphones are simultaneously tested for signal strength. Group photos with staff and a station platform shot with the ETS train in the background were also included.
Fahmi, who is also MP for Lembah Pantai and a KEADILAN leader, used the hashtags #MADANIBekerja and #YakinMADANI to underscore the Madani government’s commitment to improving public services.
The directive comes amid growing public complaints about inconsistent mobile data and 5G coverage on Malaysia’s rail networks, particularly on long-distance routes outside major urban centres. Passengers have frequently reported dropped calls and slow internet while travelling on ETS and other services.
No specific telcos were named in the minister’s statement, but industry sources say major operators including CelcomDigi, Maxis, and U Mobile will be expected to collaborate with MCMC on infrastructure upgrades along the rail corridor.
This latest move reflects the government’s push to enhance digital connectivity as part of broader infrastructure and economic development goals under the Madani administration.
