JOHOR BHARU April 13, 2026 — DAP Johor has welcomed the proposal by UMNO Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan regarding the postponement of the Johor and Melaka State Elections (PRN), prioritising political stability and the people’s welfare amid global economic uncertainties.
In a media statement issued by Sheikh Umar Bagharib bin Ali, Central Executive Committee (CEC) Member of DAP and Deputy Chairman of DAP Johor, the party described the suggestion as a positive step towards ensuring more sustainable political stability and avoiding overly frequent election cycles that could disrupt the government’s administrative focus.
“DAP Johor welcomes this proposal as it aims to ensure more sustainable political stability. In the current situation, the world is facing significant economic pressures due to uncertainties in the global energy market, including geopolitical conflicts that are affecting oil prices and supply chains. This situation also exerts pressure on the cost of living for the Malaysian people,” said Sheikh Umar in the statement.
He emphasised that the current priority for the government is to fully focus on economic recovery, creating new job opportunities, and addressing the increasingly challenging cost-of-living pressures.
Additionally, postponing the state elections has the potential to save public funds and improve the efficiency of election management by the authorities. The proposal to synchronise the state elections is also seen as capable of delivering long-term benefits.
However, Sheikh Umar stressed that any decision on postponing the PRN must be made carefully, taking into account the provisions of the Federal Constitution, the views of all stakeholders, and the principles of mature democracy.
“DAP Johor remains committed to supporting any initiatives that lead to political stability, good governance, and real benefits for the people of Johor in particular, and Malaysians in general,” he added.
Ahmad Maslan’s proposal was previously reported to be brought to the UMNO Supreme Council meeting soon, following concerns over geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia that could impact the national economy.
The Johor and Melaka State Elections are expected to be held soon according to their respective term schedules. However, discussions on the possibility of postponement or synchronisation with the 16th General Election have been gaining traction among parties in the Unity Government.
This statement by DAP Johor reflects cross-party support within Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional for maintaining stability amid global economic challenges.
