CYBERJAYA, MALAYSIA April 2, 2026 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has begun investigating five individuals suspected of disseminating false information about an impending increase in petrol and diesel prices on the social media platform Threads.
According to an official media statement released today, three of the five suspects have already been summoned for recording of statements to assist in the ongoing probe.
MCMC said complaints received alleged that the content shared by all suspects was fabricated, misleading and had the potential to cause public anxiety among consumers.
Further checks revealed that the viral posts had been edited to mimic the visual identity of Buletin TV3. The broadcaster has since issued a denial, confirming the content did not originate from them and was created by third parties. MCMC also received a formal complaint from Buletin TV3 regarding the misuse of its branding.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
“MCMC views seriously any abuse of social media platforms aimed at misleading the public with fake news,” the commission stated.
It warned that strict action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.
The public has been reminded to act responsibly when using social media and to refrain from uploading or sharing content that could disrupt social harmony and public order.
Photos released by MCMC show enforcement officers conducting interview sessions with the suspects at their premises.
The full media statement is available on the official MCMC website and social media channels.
