PUTRAJAYA. MALAYSIA March 16, 2026 – In a significant move to position itself as a leader in responsible artificial intelligence, Malaysia has launched the MY-AI Standards, a framework designed to promote trusted AI development while addressing risks such as deepfakes and digital fraud.
The initiative, announced today by the Ministry of Digital, aligns with the nation’s ambitious goal of becoming an “AI Nation” by 2030. It forms part of a broader ecosystem of policies, including the upcoming Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy 2026–2030, the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan 2026–2030, the AI Governance Bill, the National AI Code of Ethics, and expanded AI literacy programs.
“The MY-AI Standards will serve as a ‘trust infrastructure’, providing a practical framework for the development and implementation of AI standards in Malaysia,” the press release stated. By emphasizing a “trust by design” approach, the standards ensure AI technologies are built on principles of transparency, traceability, and accountability, making them auditable and less prone to misuse.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted the urgency of these measures amid growing concerns over AI’s potential for harm. “At a time when AI can also be misused to generate deepfakes, digital impersonation, and other forms of deceptive content, trusted standards are critical,” the statement noted. Without safeguards, such technologies could fuel scams, financial fraud, and misinformation, eroding public trust and information integrity.
The standards aim to complement national efforts against AI-enabled crimes by embedding safeguards that support law enforcement and regulators. They will act as a “common language” bridging the government, industry, investors, and citizens, translating ethical principles into actionable practices.
Beyond risk mitigation, the platform is expected to drive wider AI adoption across sectors. From micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to National Critical Information Infrastructures (NCIIs), organizations can innovate confidently while prioritizing responsible deployment.
Malaysia is also bolstering its global standing in AI standards through active participation in international forums, such as the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 committee on artificial intelligence.
This launch underscores Malaysia’s commitment not only to harnessing AI for economic and societal benefits but also to contributing to secure and ethical AI advancements worldwide. As AI continues to reshape global landscapes, the MY-AI Standards position the country as a proactive player in fostering digital trust.
