KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 (Bernama) –– Over the past two years, a quiet but meaningful shift has been taking place. More Cambodian patients are choosing Malaysia not just for treatment, but for a healthcare experience that combines medical excellence with comfort, reassurance and care.
This growing confidence reflects the impact of sustained engagement between Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) and stakeholders in Cambodia throughout 2025 and 2026. From healthcare travel roadshows and partnership meetings in Phnom Penh to collaborations with medical facilitators and travel partners, these efforts have strengthened awareness and improved access to Malaysia’s healthcare ecosystem.
The results are encouraging. In 2025, Cambodia emerged as one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing healthcare travel markets with 11,690 patients choosing Malaysia for treatment, a 375% surge from the previous year. Behind this remarkable figure is a story of growing trust, sustained engagement, and a healthcare experience that Cambodian patients are increasingly recommending to others. This growth generated approximately RM29.1 million in healthcare travel revenue, translating to a 220% increase compared to the previous year[1].
From Check-Ups to Complex Care
The latest data also shows that Cambodian patients are travelling to Malaysia for a wide range of medical needs. In 2025, the top treatment areas included health screening, gastroenterology, cancer and neoplasm treatment, ophthalmology, and cardiovascular care.
This reflects a shift beyond general check-ups toward more specialised and complex treatments, reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a destination for both preventive care and advanced medical services.
Equally important is the continuity of care offered by Malaysia Healthcare, from pre-arrival coordination and airport assistance to dedicated international patient services and post-treatment follow-up.
Language accessibility, cultural familiarity, and Malaysia’s reputation for warmth and hospitality also play an important role in building patient confidence.
A Seamless Journey from Phnom Penh to Recovery
Accessibility has been another key factor behind the market’s growth. With convenient flight connections between Phnom Penh and major Malaysian cities, travel time is short and manageable for patients and accompanying family members.
Popular treatment destinations include Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka, where world-class hospitals are supported by a well-developed ecosystem of accommodation, transport, and recovery options. Many patients also take the opportunity to recuperate in a comfortable environment while spending quality time with their loved ones.
Through partnerships with Cambodian facilitators and agents, the patient journey has become more seamless, ensuring smoother coordination from initial enquiry to return home.
Momentum Towards MYMT 2026
The strong growth from Cambodia comes at a strategic time as Malaysia celebrates its first Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT 2026).
Carrying the theme Healing Meets Hospitality, MYMT 2026 aims to further position Malaysia as a preferred global healthcare destination by combining clinical excellence with compassionate, patient-centred care.
Cambodia remains an important priority market under this initiative. Moving forward, MHTC will continue to deepen partnerships, expand patient access and enhance service delivery to ensure Cambodian patients feel supported at every stage of their healthcare journey.
Mr Suriaghandi Suppiah, Chief Executive Officer of MHTC believes that the evident trajectory is a powerful testament to the trust Cambodian patients have placed in Malaysia’s healthcare system. “We are deeply encouraged by the strong growth from Cambodia, which reflects not only the quality of care available in Malaysia but also the trust that Cambodian patients have placed in our healthcare ecosystem. This 219 percent increase is a testament to the collaborative efforts between MHTC, our member hospitals and our partners in Cambodia to ensure a seamless, patient-centred journey from first enquiry to full recovery.”
Beyond the numbers, the increasing flow of patients reflects something more meaningful: growing trust in Malaysia’s healthcare system and the assurance of a care experience that truly embodies Healing Meets Hospitality.
