PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA January 29, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a courtesy visit from the newly appointed Chief of the Malaysian Army, General Dato’ Azhan Md Othman, where he underscored the critical importance of professionalism, accountability, and integrity in restoring and maintaining public trust in the nation’s defence institutions.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar shared details of the meeting, highlighting the Malaysian Army’s strategic role as the “fortress of national defence” and a pillar of hope for the people. He emphasised that public confidence cannot be built on slogans alone but must be reinforced through consistent integrity at all levels of administration and operations.
Addressing current challenges, including issues of abuse of power and corruption that risk tarnishing the institution’s reputation, the Prime Minister stated there would be “no compromise” on breaches of trust. He called for transparency, honesty, and courage to address weaknesses in order to preserve the dignity of the Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, ATM).
“The MADANI Government will continue to support the Army’s efforts to remain an authoritative, professional, and respected force, while ensuring the welfare of officers, members, their families, and veterans receives due attention,” Anwar wrote.
The post, accompanied by four photographs showing the Prime Minister and General Azhan in an official office setting adorned with the Malaysian flag, has garnered significant engagement, reflecting public interest in military leadership and institutional reform.
The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s defence institutions and address past controversies affecting public perception of the armed forces.
