Malaysia Bolsters Regional Role in Vaccine Technology at UK-SEA Vax Hub

MALAYSIA, SUBANG JAYA, June 18, 2025 – Malaysia is strengthening its regional leadership in vaccine research and manufacturing through active participation in the 2nd UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub (UK-SEA Vax Hub) All Partners Meeting, held today at Monash University Malaysia.

The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, YB Dato’ Haji Mohammad Yusof bin Apdal, who emphasized the importance of long-term investment in research and development (R&D), technical talent development, and building a robust regional biotechnology ecosystem. He urged stronger strategic collaboration among ASEAN nations and global partners to ensure equitable and sustainable vaccine security.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Ajay Sharma, and Monash University Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, also attended, highlighting the role of higher education institutions in supporting vaccine innovation and cross-sector collaboration between academia, government, and industry.

The meeting brought together over 150 participants from nine ASEAN countries and the United Kingdom, including researchers, policymakers, and key vaccine industry players. Malaysia showcased its latest advancements in vaccine manufacturing facilities and research on high-risk pathogens. A special exhibition by agencies under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) highlighted the nation’s bio-pharmaceutical initiatives and products.

Malaysia’s active role in the UK-SEA Vax Hub aligns with its position as ASEAN Chair in 2025, particularly through the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI) and the ASEAN Health Division. This participation reinforces Malaysia’s image as a regional leader in vaccine innovation and public health security.
