Kuala Lumpur, 22 December 2025* – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his highest congratulations and appreciation to the entire Malaysian Contingent for their proud success at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand which just ended on 20 December.
In a statement shared on social media, Anwar described the achievement as the result of high discipline, continuous sacrifice and the unwavering fighting spirit of the athletes, coaches and team officials.
“This success is the result of high discipline, continuous sacrifice and the fighting spirit of the athletes, coaches and team officials who have never wavered in bringing glory to the country on the regional stage,” said Anwar.

The Malaysian contingent managed to collect 231 medals in total, surpassing the target of 200 medals set, with *57 gold, 57 silver and 117 bronze. This is Malaysia’s best record at the SEA Games abroad, surpassing the 216 medals won in the 2007 edition in Korat, Thailand. Malaysia occupies *fourth place overall, behind hosts Thailand (233 gold), Indonesia and Vietnam.
Anwar also stressed that this achievement should be used as a catalyst to strengthen preparations for other major sports events, so that Malaysia remains competitive at the regional and international levels.
He also stated the government’s commitment to ensure that preparations as the host of the 2027 SEA Games are carried out comprehensively, planned and authoritatively – not just in terms of infrastructure and organization, but also in building a sustainable sports ecosystem and producing world-class talent.
“More than that, sports are a platform for unifying the people that unites us across races, regions and backgrounds in a spirit of togetherness and national pride. This is the true strength of Malaysia that must continue to be preserved and strengthened,” added the Prime Minister.
This outstanding achievement was also celebrated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and the Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah, who considered it an inspiration to the younger generation.
The 2025 SEA Games, held in Bangkok and Chonburi, involved more than 13,000 athletes from 10 Southeast Asian countries, with Thailand emerging as the overall champion with a new record of 233 golds. Malaysia will next host the 34th edition in 2027.
