KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept 26, 2025 – The recent detention of a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Deputy Public Prosecutor by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for suspected drug possession has shocked many, igniting discussions about integrity and the roles of the nation’s law enforcement agencies.
The MACC officer, who reported for duty just last week, tested positive for drugs in a urine test and is now remanded for three days for investigation under Sections 12(1) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. MACC has pledged full cooperation with PDRM, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct. The MACC Chief Commissioner also proposed suspending the officer during the investigation to ensure transparency and avoid conflicts of interest.
This case not only highlights individual misconduct but also raises a key question: who holds more power, MACC or PDRM? In reality, the two agencies have distinct jurisdictions. MACC focuses on corruption and integrity issues, while PDRM handles a broad range of crimes, including drugs, placing this case squarely under police authority.
“This arrest proves no one is above the law,” said a legal observer. However, it has prompted suggestions that cases involving MACC officers be investigated by PDRM to avoid conflicts of interest, thereby preserving MACC’s credibility.
Such cases are not unprecedented. Last year, MACC Johor detained seven enforcement officers linked to a bribery syndicate involving over RM490,000. Similarly, cases of corruption involving senior DBKL officers and PDRM personnel have been reported, underscoring integrity challenges across agencies.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution previously affirmed MACC’s independence to investigate any public official without political interference, reinforcing the message that the law prevails over all.
For the public, this case serves as a reminder that integrity is not just a slogan but a practice. While MACC and PDRM have distinct roles, they must work together to uphold justice. PDRM’s action in detaining the MACC officer does not weaken the agency but strengthens the perception that the law stands above any individual or institution.
