WASHINGTON, D.C. March 3, 2026 – U.S. Representative Rob Menendez (D-New Jersey) expressed deep frustration after attending a classified congressional briefing on the Trump administration’s recent military strikes against Iran, stating that the administration failed to present a convincing case for the action.
In a video statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the lawmaker said he left the briefing “more frustrated and concerned than before.”
“The burden was on the Trump Administration to make a clear, concise case for their strike on Iran. They failed to do so,” Menendez wrote. “I’m voting yes on @RepRoKhanna’s War Powers Resolution.”
The comments come amid the ongoing fallout from “Operation Epic Fury,” a joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign launched around February 28, 2026. The strikes targeted Iranian regime and military sites and have been reported to include the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Critics have argued the operation proceeded without prior congressional approval, raising constitutional questions about presidential war powers.
Menendez’s announcement of support strengthens the bipartisan push behind the War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky). The measure aims to force the withdrawal of U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran or require explicit congressional authorization to continue.
The New Jersey Democrat, who represents the state’s 8th Congressional District, has previously voiced opposition to unilateral military action in the region. His latest remarks signal growing congressional resistance to the Trump administration’s handling of the escalating Middle East conflict, now entering its fifth day.
A vote on the Khanna-Massie resolution is expected in the coming days as lawmakers debate the limits of executive authority in foreign military engagements.
