KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA January 6, 2026 – UMNO President Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stated that the party is determined not to repeat previous errors in forming political alliances, particularly with parties that have previously betrayed trust.
Speaking on the matter, Zahid emphasized the need for caution amid ongoing discussions about potential collaborations. He remarked: “We do not want to nostalgically reuse any names that were proposed in the past, as we have not finalized them yet. Details are crucial because we do not want to be bitten by the same snake twice in the same spot.”
The statement comes in response to recent proposals to revive cooperation between UMNO and PAS under the Muafakat Nasional (MN) banner. The idea was raised by UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, prompted by current political developments in Perlis, and has drawn reactions from PAS leadership.
The issue was among those discussed during a recent UMNO Political Bureau meeting. Zahid stressed that while various suggestions for political cooperation are being put forward, UMNO remains firm in avoiding past pitfalls.
This development highlights ongoing deliberations within Malaysia’s major Malay-based parties as they navigate the evolving political landscape under the current unity government.
