Asked by reporters how far along he was in considering an attack, Trump said: “We’re thinking about doing it, and maybe tomorrow,” Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported. “Do you really think I’m going to tell you if I’m going to do it?” he added.
Trump said Iran could still avoid further military action by reaching an agreement, noting that “they want to make a deal, but the problem is, will they hold the deal?” He said his goal was to stop Iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon. “I’ve got to make it permanent,” he said. “I may have to finish it off, or maybe they’ll make a deal. But I’m not sure. Either way, we win.” He also claimed that oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz had increased compared with before the war, without giving figures.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Trump had been briefed on Pentagon options ranging from strikes on nuclear facilities and infrastructure, including bridges, to operations targeting Iranian-controlled islands, with no final decision announced. The paper also reported that US warships in the Middle East were preparing to launch new attacks if ordered. Two US aircraft carrier strike groups are operating in the region, a third is approaching from the Pacific, and an amphibious assault ship carrying Marines is being deployed.
US intelligence chief Jay Clayton warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a memo on Friday that Iran had significantly increased efforts to target Americans, with plots reaching “advanced stages”, and Washington has reduced staff at several embassies in the region. On Friday, Trump told a rally in Florida that the US “may do another little Epic Fury”, referring to the campaign against Iran that began on February 28.
Tehran has warned it will respond forcefully. Iran’s armed forces chief of staff, Ali Abdollahi, said US warships would never be allowed into the Gulf, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said even limited strikes would draw a response “several times greater”. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed Washington on Saturday for the collapse of an interim deal, but said both sides should still try to conclude it.
The Hill reported that US Central Command has prepared strike options for Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and that some analysts expect strikes to resume after the US midterm elections on November 3. Trump had earlier indicated that no strikes would take place before the vote, but US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said on Friday that a strike that weekend was “absolutely” possible. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told the Financial Times the war could last another year, but said he hoped Iran would “come to the table” before then.
