SHAH ALAM, SELANGOR, MALAYSIA January 20, 2026 – His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor, accompanied by the Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah, graced the ceremony today to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the development of a Smart City across Selangor state.
The event, held at the Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam, marks a strategic collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Selangor State Government. The partnership focuses on expanding smart connectivity infrastructure, including high-speed public Wi-Fi services, future-proof fiber optic networks, fifth-generation (5G) rollout, and the installation of smart poles to ensure comprehensive network coverage throughout the state.
Key areas of emphasis include enhancing public safety, intelligent traffic management, and smart flood control systems. All initiatives will be monitored via the Selangor Integrated & Intelligent Operations Centre (SIIOC), enabling real-time oversight and efficient urban management.
In a significant boost, the funding allocation for these projects has been increased to RM450 million, up from the initial RM350 million, following a request from the Selangor government to MCMC.
The MoU exchange was formalized by Selangor State Secretary Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Fadzli bin Ahmad Tajuddin and MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din. It was witnessed by Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari and Communications Minister Dato’ Fahmi Fadzil.
Smartsel Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI, will serve as the primary implementing agency. The company will coordinate the integration of five core smart city components: mobility, public safety, disaster management, digital governance, and industrial connectivity through 5G networks.
This initiative aligns with national goals under Malaysia Digital 2030 and the Selangor Digitalisation Plan 2026-2030. It underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) to benefit citizens, fostering efficient, secure, and inclusive digital services in line with the Malaysia MADANI framework.
The Smart City Development in Selangor is poised to strengthen integrated technological transformation at the state level, incorporating real-time data from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to tackle increasingly complex urban challenges and streamline service delivery across government agencies.
The presence of the Sultan and Crown Prince highlights Selangor’s dedication to a digital agenda that promotes public welfare through resilient governance, improved quality of life, service efficiency, and sustainable development.
