The appointees were selected based on their expertise, experience, and contributions in journalism, media, academia, and communications. This follows the enforcement of the Malaysia Media Council Act 2025 [Act 868] on 14 June 2025, establishing the MMC as a self-regulatory body to oversee Malaysia’s media industry.

The MMC aims to uphold media freedom while ensuring the public receives accurate, credible, and fair information, in line with the MADANI Government’s commitment through the Ministry of Communications. The council will foster integrity and ethical practices within the media industry through self-regulation.

Under Section 5(1) of Act 868, the MMC’s key functions include:

1. Setting standards and a code of conduct for media practitioners and independent media professionals, promoting ethical and responsible journalism.
2. Encouraging the highest standards of responsible journalism, media freedom, and the rights of media practitioners.
3. Regulating the ethics and professional conduct of media professionals.
4. Promoting communication between media practitioners, the government, and the public.
5. Proposing legal reforms related to media freedom.

The appointments mark the official start of the MMC’s formation, which will serve as an independent institution supporting a responsible and ethical media industry, aligned with the spirit of Malaysia MADANI and parliamentary democracy.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching was also present at the event.
