KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA Nov. 8, 2025 – In a move signaling renewed commitment to Sabah’s development, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin has humbly declared his intention to contest the N22 Tanjung Aru state assembly seat as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate in the upcoming polls.
With a tone of humility and service, Chan, the sitting Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, emphasized that the time has come for Tanjung Aru voters to elect a representative with proven experience, deep policy knowledge, and a genuine understanding of the people’s needs.
“It is time for Tanjung Aru to choose a people’s representative who is experienced, understands policies, knows the people, and has a spirit of service,” Chan stated in his announcement, delivered in both Malay and Mandarin to reach the constituency’s diverse communities.
Expressing gratitude to PH leadership for their trust, Chan highlighted his readiness to once again serve at the state level. “Thank you for the trust and mandate given by the party leadership for me to once again offer my services at the state level,” he said.
The announcement comes amid heightened political activity in Sabah, where the state election is viewed not merely as a contest for votes but as a high-stakes battle for political stability and sustainable development. Chan warned that the outcome could shape the future trajectory of the state’s progress.
“This fight is not just about political victory, but also a gamble on political stability and the future of sustainable development in Sabah,” he remarked. “We must choose a representative who is not only bold in speaking out but also understands and is capable of formulating policies, and who can champion the state’s interests at the national level.”
Drawing on his parliamentary tenure and ministerial role, Chan pledged to bring fresh commitment and expertise to drive Sabah’s advancement. “I am ready to bring new experiences and dedication to continue contributing to Sabah’s development,” he affirmed.
In a rallying call to supporters, Chan urged voters to back his candidacy with the slogan: “Vote for Chan, There’s Hope! PH Leads, Sabah Gets Stronger!” – complete with the party’s iconic rocket emoji (🚀🔺).
Chan’s bid for Tanjung Aru, a key urban constituency in Kota Kinabalu known for its mix of residential, commercial, and tourism interests, underscores PH’s strategy to leverage experienced federal figures in retaining state power.
Political observers note that Chan’s entry could bolster PH’s urban appeal, especially among Chinese and mixed communities, while his emphasis on policy advocacy aligns with the coalition’s push for greater autonomy and resource allocation for Sabah under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
As campaigning intensifies, Chan’s multilingual outreach – including a Mandarin version of his statement – highlights efforts to engage Sabah’s multicultural electorate. “With a humble heart, I announce my candidacy to represent Pakatan Harapan in the N22 Tanjung Aru contest,” he said in Mandarin. “It’s time for Tanjung Aru to elect a representative who understands policies, the locale, and the people’s voices.”
