GEORGETOWN, Malaysia. July 19, 2025 – In a move to foster financial literacy among youth, 200 B40 students in Tanjong have each received a RM50 initial contribution to open their i-Saraan EPF accounts. This initiative aims to encourage early savings habits and financial awareness from school age.

The i-Saraan scheme, initially designed for the self-employed, is now accessible to teenagers as young as 14. Backed by a 20% government matching incentive (up to RM500 annually), it offers a smart step toward long-term financial stability.
Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying emphasized that participation is entirely voluntary. “Parents may wonder if opening an i-Saraan account or making monthly contributions is mandatory. The answer is no. This is a flexible initiative, allowing contributions only when families are ready,” she said.
Beyond savings, the program instills a forward-thinking mindset, preparing young people for their future well before they leave school.
The initiative’s success stems from close collaboration between the EPF Georgetown Branch and the Northeast District Education Office. Together, they are laying the foundation for a stronger financial future for the next generation.
