WASHINGTON D.C January 31, 2026 – Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) announced on X that he has been tasked with helping lead impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, unless she resigns or is removed from her position in the coming days.
In a post on X, Garcia wrote: “I’ve been asked to help lead impeachment proceedings against Secretary Noem, unless she resigns or is fired in the coming days. She must be held accountable.”
The announcement was accompanied by a video clip of Garcia speaking at a press conference in Long Beach, surrounded by signs reading “LOS INMIGRANTES SON BIENVENIDOS AQUÍ” (“Immigrants are welcome here”) and “STOP VIOLATING DUE PROCESS.” In the footage, Garcia passionately declares that “ICE is not welcome” in California, Long Beach, and Los Angeles County, citing escalated violence linked to the agency.
The video transitions to Garcia stating he will join efforts on the Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees to initiate impeachment proceedings against Noem if she does not step down, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Garcia’s statement comes amid heightened Democratic criticism of Noem’s leadership at DHS, particularly following reports of fatal shootings during federal immigration enforcement operations, including incidents involving individuals named Alex Pretti and Renee Good. House Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have ramped up calls for Noem’s resignation or impeachment, with a resolution (H.Res. 996) already introduced accusing her of high crimes and misdemeanors.
Garcia, a vocal critic of ICE policies, has previously called for the agency’s abolition, arguing it causes harm to communities without sufficient due process.
The White House and Republican leaders have rallied behind Noem, dismissing the impeachment push as partisan. President Trump has expressed continued support for the DHS secretary amid the controversies.
Garcia’s post has garnered significant engagement on X, reflecting ongoing national debates over immigration enforcement and federal agency accountability.
