KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug 16, 2025 – Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali today celebrated the achievements of local kopitiam chain Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock, which earned a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records for selling a record 452,162 plates of nasi lemak in 2024.
The chain, founded in 2012 and now operating 18 branches nationwide, was lauded by the minister for its growth and contributions to the domestic economy. Speaking at the event, Armizan highlighted the brand’s timely initiative to offer a 50% discount on its nasi lemak menu—from RM13.90 to RM6.80—during the 2025 National Month celebrations.

“This initiative reflects their commitment to national agendas by fostering patriotism throughout the month,” Armizan said, noting that it aligns with the chain’s multi-ethnic branding, symbolized by the names Ali, Muthu, and Ah Hock, which promote racial unity.
He described the promotion as a “two-pronged strategy” that boosts business while showcasing the strengths and uniqueness of local products and services infused with national identity. Armizan urged other local industry players, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs), to follow suit by adopting innovative strategies to highlight their offerings.

As the ministry leading the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM), the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) encouraged businesses to leverage digital promotions to attract domestic consumers and expand reach to foreign tourists, particularly in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“The role of local industries is crucial in showcasing the uniqueness and strengths of brands and products to draw international visitors,” Armizan emphasized.

KPDN, responsible for the distribution trade sector including wholesale, retail, food, and beverage sub-sectors, remains committed to fostering a healthy and progressive domestic trade environment. This sector continues to be a major contributor to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Citing Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) recent report on the second quarter of 2025, Armizan noted that the economy grew by 4.4%, driven by robust domestic demand and a positive labor market. The services sector, encompassing retail and food services, strengthened to 5.1% growth in Q2, up from 5.0% in Q1.
The minister expressed optimism that this momentum would persist, supporting a positive economic climate. He reiterated the government’s high commitment under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) to scale up SMEs, enhancing their potential and competitiveness to create higher value and boost national economic development.
