PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA December 23, 2025*– Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated the Madani government’s commitment to the rule of law and judicial independence following a High Court decision rejecting former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
In a media statement issued today, Anwar referred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s ruling on 22 December, which invalidated a purported royal “addendum order” that Najib claimed would allow him to be transferred from Kajang Prison to home detention. The court, presided over by Judge Alice Loke Yee Ching, found that the addendum – allegedly issued by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong – was not deliberated or decided during the Pardons Board meeting in January 2024, rendering it invalid under the Federal Constitution.
“The Madani government remains steadfast in upholding the principles of the rule of law and the separation of powers,” Anwar said. “The judiciary must and will continue to be free from any external influence. It is on this principle that I respect the decision made by the Judge.”
Anwar emphasised that all parties should respect the court’s verdict, including available legal avenues for appeal or petitions to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in line with existing laws.
He called for patience and wisdom in handling the sensitive issue, urging restraint amid public discourse. “Even if some choose not to express sympathy towards Dato’ Sri Najib Razak and his family, it is inappropriate to inflame the situation or heighten tensions in this delicate time,” the statement read.
Najib, 72, is serving a reduced six-year sentence (from an original 12 years) for corruption involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, linked to the 1MDB scandal. His partial pardon in 2024 halved the term and fine but did not include house arrest provisions as decided by the board.
Najib’s legal team has indicated plans to appeal the latest ruling. The case has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions in Anwar’s unity government, which includes Najib’s party, UMNO.
Anwar concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to constitutional principles and judicial integrity.
