KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA February 12, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a strong message on the importance of the rule of law as the foundation for national harmony and prosperity during his speech at the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Chinese New Year 2026 reception.
In a video clip shared on his official X account, Anwar stressed that while freedom of speech and differing views are protected, they must not override unity or legal sovereignty in Malaysia’s multicultural society.
“So let us be plain… This country must be based on rules and law, not the whims and fancies of individuals, however strong you may feel,” Anwar said. “If you do not respect this, you will create issues and problems.”
He acknowledged that his stance may not be universally popular but insisted no group can operate with complete disregard for laws. “The country cannot continue to allow any groups to function with complete disrespect for rules and laws,” he added.
The Prime Minister’s remarks, delivered amid recent disputes over the construction and demolition of houses of worship without proper permits, underscore the need to handle religious and cultural sensitivities strictly through legal processes rather than individual or vigilante actions.
Anwar reiterated that Malaysia’s strength lies in mutual respect and adherence to regulations, stating the nation will remain peaceful and prosperous only if all parties reject actions that threaten harmony.
The speech was well-received at the festive ACCCIM event, which celebrated the Lunar New Year while highlighting shared commitment to national unity under the Malaysia MADANI vision.
