PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA March 18, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has strongly criticised Israeli occupation forces for keeping the gates of Masjid al-Aqsa closed during the final days of Ramadan and into the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, calling the move a clear violation of international law and an indefensible act lacking any moral or legal basis.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) late yesterday, the Prime Minister said the continued closure denies Palestinian Muslims their fundamental right to worship at Islam’s third holiest site.
“Israel’s actions have no legitimate basis in law, in morality or in any sincere conception of human dignity. The continued closure of al-Aqsa is indefensible and a clear violation of international law,” Anwar wrote.
He urged governments with genuine influence to go beyond statements and apply real pressure to secure the mosque’s immediate reopening.
“To Palestinian Muslims marking Eid under these conditions: your faith, your patience and your perseverance are seen. You do not stand alone. Malaysians will continue to speak where we must and act where we can,” he added.
The statement was accompanied by a photo from Anadolu Agency showing Palestinian worshippers praying on the street outside the closed Al-Aqsa compound, with the Dome of the Rock visible in the background.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound has reportedly been closed by Israeli authorities since late February 2026, citing security concerns amid heightened regional tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. This marks one of the most prolonged restrictions during Ramadan in recent history, forcing worshippers to pray outside the gates.
Anwar’s firm stance aligns with Malaysia’s longstanding position in support of Palestinian rights and has drawn widespread attention both domestically and internationally.
The Prime Minister’s call comes just days before Eid al-Fitr, expected around March 20, 2026, when millions of Muslims worldwide mark the end of the holy month of fasting.
