KUALA LUMPUR, December 30, 2025 – Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today announced his decision to resign as Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), effective from 1 January 2026.
In an official media statement issued on 30 December 2025, Muhyiddin said he had decided to step down after leading the coalition since its establishment five years ago.
“I have made the decision to resign as Chairman of Perikatan Nasional effective from 1 January 2026,” Muhyiddin said.
He also expressed his gratitude to the entire PN leadership for their full support throughout his tenure leading the coalition.
“I extend my thanks to all the PN leadership who have given me their full support during my time leading PN since its establishment five years ago,” he added.
Muhyiddin further conveyed his wishes for continued success to the PN leadership line-up and its member parties as they strive for a better future.
The announcement follows recent political turmoil in Perlis, where relations between PN component parties – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and PAS – became strained following the change of the state’s Menteri Besar.
As of now, no further details have been provided regarding Muhyiddin’s successor as PN Chairman. The opposition coalition is expected to hold internal discussions to determine new leadership ahead of 2026.
Muhyiddin, who is also the President of Bersatu, remains at the helm of the party for the time being. He previously served as Malaysia’s 8th Prime Minister from March 2020 to August 2021.
