CYBERJAYA, Malaysia, Sept 19, 2025 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has imposed fines of RM100,000 each on Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn. Bhd., following approval from the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

The action against Sin Chew stems from an MCMC investigation that found the organization had uploaded an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang on its digital newspaper platform.

Meanwhile, Sinar Karangkraf was penalized for a post on its official Instagram account featuring a profile with false information about the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The claims alleged the IGP held a top leadership position in a local political party.

Both investigations were conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), with penalties as stipulated under Section 233(2). The compounds were issued pursuant to Section 243 of the same Act.

MCMC underscored the importance of the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty, unity, and dignity, which must always be displayed accurately and with full respect.

“At the same time, the dissemination of false content involving national security institutions can undermine public order and societal confidence in authorities,” the commission stated.

In this regard, all media organizations and social media users are reminded to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of published content, particularly when involving official national symbols and emblems.

MCMC affirmed its commitment to bolstering enforcement and implementing various digital literacy initiatives to safeguard national harmony and stability.
