MCMC Probes Influencers for Sharing Video of Feeding Leftovers to Homeless Man

CYBERJAYA, August 5, 2025  – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation and recorded statements from three individuals believed to be social media influencers in connection with a viral video showing them giving leftover food to a homeless person.

The content, described as extremely distasteful, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation among netizens, while also touching on sensitivities within Malaysia’s diverse society.

The probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum penalty of a RM50,000 fine, up to one year in prison, or both, upon conviction.

Statements were recorded and further investigations carried out today at the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters in Johor. Authorities seized three mobile phones and three SIM cards to aid the inquiry.

MCMC reiterated its commitment to strengthening digital literacy initiatives through the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), aimed at fostering a digitally savvy, ethical, and responsible society. This includes promoting the creation of thoughtful, ethical, and respectful content, as well as raising awareness of positive values in the nation’s digital ecosystem.
