CYBERJAYA, MALAYSIA February 22, 2026 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into an individual suspected of uploading highly threatening, insulting and extremely offensive content targeting members of the Terengganu Royal Family via a personal account on platform X.
According to the official media statement issued today, the content touched on sensitive 3R issues (Race, Religion and Royalty) and contained elements of insult and threats that could potentially incite hatred, public tension and disturb national peace and order.
To assist with the probe, the individual was called in for a statement recording session at Balai Polis Lanchang yesterday (Feb 21). One mobile phone and one SIM card were seized during the session for digital forensic analysis.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine or up to two years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it will not compromise on any misuse of social media involving threats, incitement of hatred or insults against the Royal Institution.
“Enforcement action will be taken firmly and professionally in accordance with existing laws, regardless of the background of any party,” the statement read.
The commission also reminded the public not to abuse digital platforms to spread illegal content.
The case has been widely shared on official MCMC channels, highlighting the authorities’ zero-tolerance stance on online content that threatens national harmony and the sanctity of Malaysia’s Royal Institutions.
Further updates are expected as the forensic analysis progresses.
