PUTRAJAYA February 18, 2026 – As Muslims across Malaysia prepare for the dawn-to-dusk fasting, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared a heartfelt message on social media platform X, welcoming the arrival of Ramadan 1447H, which officially commences on February 19.
In his post, Anwar expressed profound gratitude to Allah SWT for the opportunity to embrace the sacred month once again. Quoting a hadith from Talhah bin Ubaidillah RA, he recited the Prophet Muhammad SAW’s prayer upon sighting the crescent moon: “Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam. Rabbi wa rabbuka Allah,” which translates to “O Allah, let this moon appear on us with security and Iman; with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your Lord and mine is Allah.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that Ramadan’s observances, including fasting, extend beyond mere rituals to achieve the deeper objectives of Islamic teachings. “The pinnacle of enjoyment behind these practices is attaining taqwa, executed through fasting via a process of character-building education, rooted in conscience awareness and inner vigilance sparked by fear of Allah SWT,” he stated.
Anwar further linked the spiritual discipline to everyday life, urging a spirit of mujahadah (struggle) that not only pursues otherworldly aspirations but also enhances self-discipline and wholehearted dedication to daily responsibilities. He supported this with a Quranic verse from Surah al-Ankabut (29:69): “And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.”
Accompanying the message was an animated video featuring a vibrant poster with the Malaysian coat of arms, a majestic mosque dome under a crescent moon, and the text “Ramadan Kareem” in Arabic and English, alongside the date “1 Ramadan 1447H | 19 Februari 2026.” The post concluded with hashtags #MalaysiaMADANI, #MADANIbekerja, and #RancakkanMADANI, aligning with the government’s vision for a progressive and compassionate society.
The official start of Ramadan was confirmed earlier by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, following the non-sighting of the crescent moon on February 17. This announcement, made on behalf of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, aligns with similar declarations in neighboring countries like Indonesia and the Philippines.
In Malaysia, the first day of Ramadan is observed as a public holiday in states such as Johor, Kedah, and Malacca, allowing communities to focus on spiritual reflection, family gatherings, and charitable acts. Nationwide, the month brings bustling bazaars, increased mosque activities, and a heightened emphasis on zakat and community support.
Anwar’s message has garnered positive responses online, with users from Malaysia and abroad extending reciprocal wishes. One reply from Turkey read, “Semoga bulan suci Ramadan diberkati untuk anda dan keluarga tersayang,” wishing blessings for the Prime Minister and his family.
As the sun sets tomorrow, millions of Malaysian Muslims will begin their fast, marking a period of devotion, self-restraint, and unity that defines the essence of Ramadan.
