KUCHING, SARAWAK, MALAYSIA March 13, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim joined the local community in Kuching for a MADANI iftar event on Friday, using the occasion to underscore the deeper significance of Ramadan as a period not only for worship but for building piety, brotherhood, and inter-ethnic harmony in Malaysia.
The event, held amid a festive atmosphere, served as a reminder of the values of humanity, justice, and unity that form the foundation of Malaysian society, according to the Prime Minister. In his remarks shared on social media, Anwar emphasized how Ramadan acts as a “madrasah” – a school for the soul – that strengthens communal bonds across races and religions.
During the gathering, Anwar also addressed pressing global challenges impacting Malaysia’s economy. He highlighted the unforeseen crises stemming from conflicts in the Gulf and Persian regions, which have led to rising oil prices and disruptions in global supply chains. In response, the government has taken proactive measures to shield citizens from these pressures, including maintaining the subsidized price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per liter – a rate unchanged despite increases in neighboring countries.
“Our principle is clear: when the people face cost-of-living pressures, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that burden is not passed on to them,” Anwar stated.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of domestic resilience as the nation’s true strength. He called for a more diligent work ethic, improved governance, and a spirit of innovation and collaboration among the federal government, states, private sector, and citizens to transform challenges into opportunities. Quoting German-Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter’s concept of “creative destruction,” Anwar noted that crises demand bold approaches to reinvent economic systems.
“With collective effort and unwavering prayers, Malaysia must advance boldly as a resilient, united, and strong entity,” he added, invoking the hashtags #MalaysiaMADANI, #RancakkanMADANI, and #MADANIbekerja.
The iftar event drew a diverse crowd, reflecting Sarawak’s multicultural fabric, with attendees in traditional attire engaging in conversations and handshakes with the Prime Minister. Photos from the gathering show Anwar interacting warmly with participants under colorful decorations, symbolizing the communal spirit of the holy month.
This appearance aligns with the MADANI government’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive development and social cohesion, particularly during Ramadan, as Malaysia navigates global economic headwinds.
