Malaysian Communications Minister Urges Broadcast of Qunut Nazilah Prayer Amid Israeli Flotilla Incident

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA October 2, 2025 – In a swift response to Israel’s alleged violation of international law by intercepting and detaining the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian aid team, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on all television and radio stations nationwide to air recitations of the Qunut Nazilah prayer during prime-time slots.

The urgent media statement, issued for immediate broadcast, underscores the significance of collective prayer and national solidarity in confronting what Fahmi described as a “bitter moment” in global affairs. “The prayers and solidarity of the Malaysian people are extremely important in facing this trying time,” Fahmi stated, highlighting the role of spiritual unity in supporting justice and humanitarian efforts.

The directive comes amid heightened tensions over the GSF’s mission, which aimed to deliver aid to Gaza but was thwarted by Israeli forces. Fahmi emphasized that broadcasting the prayer—a traditional Islamic supplication for relief in times of calamity—would foster a sense of shared resolve among Malaysians.

In parallel measures, Fahmi has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ramp up surveillance of online content related to the Israel-Palestine conflict within Malaysian digital spaces. “Firm and immediate actions will be enforced against any efforts to disseminate Zionist propaganda, inciting narratives, or content that disrupts harmony and public sensitivities,” he warned, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to misinformation that could exacerbate social divisions.

Fahmi further appealed to the public to rely solely on verified sources for updates. “I urge all Malaysians to consult information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and official channels, including the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre managed by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM), to avoid the proliferation of fake or unverified news,” he added.

This development aligns with Malaysia’s longstanding advocacy for Palestinian rights, positioning the nation as a vocal supporter in international forums. Fahmi’s call serves not only as a religious imperative but also as a reminder of the power of unified action in the face of geopolitical challenges.
