PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA January 31, 2026 – The MADANI Government has officially agreed to a foundational proposal to limit the tenure of the Prime Minister to a maximum of 10 years, describing it as a crucial step towards strengthening accountability, checks and balances, and constitutional governance.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said following the weekly Cabinet meeting. The proposal emerged from the government’s ongoing institutional reform agenda and was finalised after comprehensive consultations that included public input, expert views, and holistic engagement sessions with various stakeholders.
“The limitation on the Prime Minister’s term is aimed at preventing excessive concentration of power, reinforcing the democratic system, and enhancing public confidence in national leadership institutions, in line with mature democratic practices at the international level,” the statement read.
The government will now proceed with several related amendments to the Federal Constitution, which are expected to be tabled in the upcoming parliamentary session.
This move is seen as one of the most significant governance reforms under the current administration, signalling a commitment to structural changes that prioritise transparency, accountability, and the long-term health of Malaysia’s democratic institutions.
